Hydrogen sulphide corrodes engines, boilers and pipework, poisons upgrading media and causes odour. Microaeration removes most of it where it is formed, before the gas leaves the digester, without chemicals.
A controlled trace of air or oxygen is dosed into the digester. Sulphide-oxidising bacteria that are naturally present use it to turn H₂S into elemental sulphur, which settles on surfaces and leaves with the digestate.
The dose is small enough not to disturb the methane-forming bacteria. Online measurement of H₂S and O₂ in the biogas controls the dosing, keeps the oxygen well below safety limits and avoids over-aeration. Where needed, microaeration is combined with iron dosing in the digester.
